Donaudelta 2026

Trip to the Danube Delta with Heinz Hudelist, Naturfotowerkstatt,  from the 14th to 20th of June. It was really an experience - breathtaking wetland landscapes, incredible bird wildlife, and unforgettable moments in one of Europe's most beautiful natural areas. The Danube Delta covers a large area in Southeastern Rumania on the border to the Ukraine, 5800 km2 of waterways, lakes and reed beds.

After a flight to Bukarest, it took around 4 hours to reach Tulcea, where we boarded our hotel ship that would become our home for our week in the Delta.

Up before dawn to an early start, our first excursion into the Delta by means of a small motor boat took us into the Northwestern part of the Delta near the Ukrainian border.  On this first day we had some rain, but bad weather was an exception during the rest of our journey. The Danube divides here into three arms, the Northern Arm is called the Chilia branch, while the Sulina and Sfântu Gheorghe branches flow farther south through the delta.

In the meantime, our hotel boat was moved to Crizan on the Sulina Arm of the Danube, where we continued our journey through the heart of the Delta.

After some early morning fog, we encountered all sorts of birds and also experienced literally hundreds of pelicans fishing.

The new position of our hotel boat was near Lacul Iacob and near there were several bird species tending their nests.

The most Eastern and last site for our boat was near the town of Mila 23. We spent the last days here in the heart of the Delta with another trip to the Ukranian border in the Northeast. The quiet channels, reed beds, and wide open skies made it a memorable end to our journey.
